In early December 1959, at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Strathfield (Sydney) a church service was held to commemorate the beginning of the Vitiaz Association in Australia.

A Branch of a world wide Russian Orthodox Youth movement with its Headquarters in Paris, France, the Vitiaz Association takes its name from the old Slavonic word ‘vitiaz’ meaning ‘Knight’ or ‘Warrior’, referring to the legendary heroes of old Russe.

In Australia, the organisation was started by the late Anatole Zakroczymski, OAM (1923-1999) who dedicated his life to working with children and youth. He was its founder and President of the Association for an uninterrupted term of nearly forty years.

In 1964 the Association was registered as a Charity in the State of NSW, under the Charitable Organisations Act.

The official publication of the Association is “The Vitiaz News - Vesti Vityazei”. Under the editorship of the late Anatole Zakroczymski, it has also been involved in producing booklets on the Life of Saint Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Vladimir.

The Vitiaz Association is totally self sufficient. It does not receive any financial assistance from either local, state or federal funding. Its income is derived from membership fees, donations, bazaars, annual ball, and other fundraising activities.

Its current projects are the realisation of its founder’s vision: the building of an additional wing to the existing hostel, and the building of a small chapel on the hostel site.

Кто Такие Витязи ?

Само имя "Витязь" возникло из глубокой древности. Оно означало на многих славянских языках либо богатыря, либо победителя, либо отважного воина как это было в древней Руси.

Но не только легендарные богатыри и бесстрашные воины Руси заслуживали это название.

Великие Русские люди приложившие свои силы к созданию русской христианской государственности заслуживают также чтобы их именовали витязями. Как пример можно назвать святого князя Владимира, святого Александра Невского, святого князя Димитрия Донского, Ивана Сусанина и много других. И понятно что столь высокое имя и такие великие примеры могут служить подлинным и высоким идеалом для русской молодежи.

Витязи, это православное и национальное движение русской молодежи любящей сыновней любовью свою страждущую мать Россию и желающей послужить ей в деле восстановления ее истинного облика.

Национальное чувство - чувство любви к своему отечеству, к своему народу, ощущение кровной связанности с его историческим прошлым, с его культурой, участие в его созидательной работе - есть чувство возвышающее, положительное творческое чувство данное нам от Бога. Оно связано с историческим путём России, с её прошлым, с её духовным обликом, с исканием правды и справедливости, с молитвой, с преданностью православной Церкви - матери русского народа.

Истинное национальное воспитание может быть осуществлено только на основе подлинной русской национальной и религиозной идеи, свободной от подражания, зависимости и руководства не русскими идеями и организациями. В этом смысл движения Витязей.

Мальчики и юноши носят звание Витязей, а девочки и девушки именуются Вожатыми.

Originally founded in Paris, France in the late 1920's the Vitiaz Association has active branches in Australia, Belgium, France and Russia France

Aims of the Organisation

The aims of the Vitiaz Association are: the religious, cultural, social and recreational education of young boys and girls of Russian background. Children can become members from eight years of age.

These aims are achieved through meetings, conferences, seminars, concerts, social evenings, excursions. Many members participate in Australia wide events such as the Choral Congress, or the Annual Russian Youth Congress which is held on a rotational basis in different states.

Summer Camps

The annual highlight for the organisation, is the Summer Camp held at the Association’s hostel in the Blue Mountains, some two and a half hours drive west of Sydney. The hostel is set among native bushland on nearly six acres, yet only over a kilometre from Blackheath railway station. Living in tents, the children have the opportunity to go swimming, bushwalking, play sports and learn various arts and crafts. Map of Blackheath
